And Then He Kissed Me
She recognised him as soon as she saw him, she remembered the last time they met. It was two years ago He had been a surgeon in Korea and she had been a red cross worker. It had been a brief affair but definitely not one that Donna had forgotten. Now back in the States would he feel any differently about her. Donna played this thought through her mind as she looked at him across the hotel lobby. He’d lost a bit of weight but he looked much the same. He approached her.
“Donna. I didn’t expect to see you here,” he said offering his hand.
“It’s lovely to see you,” Donna replied.
He escorted her into the dining room and they sat beside each other at dinner.
“So you’re a nurse now?” he enquired.
Donna nodded.
“How long have you been a nurse?” he asked.
“Six months. After being in Korea I decided that was what I wanted to do.” Donna told him.
They enjoyed their starter whilst talking about medicine, nursing and the war.
“How long are you in Boston?” Charles asked.
“I’m here for three more weeks. I’m here to look for a job but I haven’t had much luck as yet” she replied
Donna was flattered by his interest in her. He seemed to avoid talking about himself too much. Just before they went into the conference hall for the afternoon’s session he asked if she wanted someone to show her around Boston. She already knew her way around Boston as her sister lived there but it would be lovely to spend some time with him. She’d thought about him every day since they parted and knew that he meant something to her.
She was going to meet him at the entrance to Boston Common tomorrow. She could hardly wait.

The next day Donna set out for Boston Common in plenty of time. He was already there. He greeted her with a big smile.
“Shall we walk around the lake?” he asked.
“Sounds fine to me,” Donna replied.
He offered his arm and Donna willingly took it. They walked through the park slowly but it gave them plenty of time to chat. He still hadn’t said much about himself.
“Have you been to the symphony hall?” Donna asked.
He seemed to tense.
“Are you okay?” Donna said.
He nodded but Donna wasn’t fooled. Something had changed since the war. His face used to light up when he talked about music and the symphony hall. He loved his music but he seemed really uncomfortable talking about it. Donna decided to change the subject.
After their walk he turned to face her. His beautiful blue eyes gazed into hers.
“Would you like to accompany me to the dinner dance next week?” he asked.
“I’d love to,” she replied.
He kissed her on the cheek before saying goodbye.

Donna was really excited about the dinner dance. She began making preparations in her mind as soon as she got home. Her first thought was what to wear. She paid a visit on her sister. Amanda seemed to know more about clothes than she did and would come up with some ideas. After discussing the problem Amanda suggested they go shopping. They looked in hundreds of shops before finding anything that was even slightly suitable.
“What about this one?” Donna asked holding up a blue evening dress.
“It’s a little bit too low” Amanda replied.
She picked a plum coloured evening gown out and held it up.
“This would be better but only you can decide. I don’t know this guy.”
They went for coffee whilst Donna decided. Amanda discussing the pros and cons of each outfit. None came close to the plum coloured one so Donna decided on that.

“Are y-you going to the d-d-dinner dance?” Honoria said as she rearranged the flowers on his dining room table. She was getting impatient for lunch.
“Yes. I am.” he answered.
The maid came in with their lunch. Charles thanked her and began eating. He really didn’t seem to care about the dinner dance.
Strange things had happened to her brother since the war? He seemed a lot more relaxed, less foul tempered but yet he was jumpy whenever she talked about music. This wasn’t the Charles she knew before the war.
“H-have you g-got your date?” She asked.
There were lots of women in Boston hoping he’d ask them. She didn’t blame them. He was a handsome man. Charles carried on eating his lunch. Honoria thought perhaps he hadn’t decided on a date. She was surprised when he told her he had.
“ A lady I met in Korea” he replied.
Honoria wasn’t sure about his choice. Her parents had always been very particular about the women that he associated with. They usually set him up with the daughter of one of their friends. They’d really hate it if he married a woman of a lower social class. Honoria didn’t think it was right that they chose his dates but they had his best interests at heart. She hoped he’d used his common sense about this date.
